Imaging exams like MRI scans, CT scans, PET scans, X-rays, or ultrasounds can be expensive when done at a hospital, even if the hospital is in network. Consider having an exam done at a nonhospital imaging center. It may keep more of your money in your wallet, particularly if you have not met your annual deductible.

How can you tell what centers are in your area? Log into Aetna and select Find Care & Pricing/Find Care. In the search line, add the type of imaging, for example, Chest CT Scan without dye. You will be presented with a list of available locations in your area that perform the imaging you have requested.

Obtain a cost estimate by selecting Find Care & Pricing/Pricing/Get Cost Estimates. Enter your search and you will obtain a list of facilities in your area with the projected cost (Note: It is advisable to call the facility and confirm the pricing for the imaging you need.)

As an example, a cost comparison for a chest CT exam, in Austin Texas, found the following representing out-of-pocket expense
Hospital $773
Diagnostic Center $400-450
Self-Pay about $250 (by calling provider)
These costs reflect over significant cost savings to me, using insurance, by utilizing an imaging center.
